USC chokes away another chance for a title

News flash: Oregon State is the new Stanford.

The Beavers just pulled off a huge upset tonight, beating No. 1 USC 27-20 a few minutes ago. And Oregon State looked pretty dang good doing it, if I say so myself. They ran the ball up the gut, they moved the ball well and they shut out USC's high-flying, bullet train of an offense in the first half.

I'm just in a state of shock. How did SC lose?

USC looked so good this year; I thought they were going to the national championship easy. But the Trojans proved once again that they just can't seem to put together the string of wins needed to get there. Their inconsistency is humorous bordering on tragic.

I mean, how can a team with so many filthy stinking athletes lose to an unranked, 1-2 conference team?

Was it laziness?

Were the Trojans looking ahead?

Were the Trojans overrated?

Are the Beavers just that good? (If so, look out Utah!)

Wow. I wonder what would have happened if Bronco was coaching the Trojans...

props to Rodgers (Oregon State's running back). He was the go to guy last night and he brought his "A" game. As a freshman it takes guts to run the ball up the middle against the #1 team...nobody could tackle the guy! Game ball definitely goes to him.

I wouldn't call Oregon State the new Stanford. Oregon State had already done the same thing in '06. And Oregon State's winning against the first string QB - not to take anything away from Stanford last year.

Anyway, I agree, both Rodgers were killing the 'SC defense.

Jonathan nailed it. Adam, we are not the new Stanford. I do think Stanford is on the up swing, but that win last year was random. The Beavs have beat USC at home 3 out of the last 4. And in the last 8 years we have beat 5 out of the 6 top ten teams to come into our house. More to come on my blog: nmsb08@blogspot.com soon.

@Adam
still looking for blog content suggestions? as our top 10 dreams are becoming a reality, i'm paying more attention to out of conference play. i don't have time to watch (tv or online) games for every team so i'd liked to know the most important games to pay attention to (this is were the asb comes in). obviously, we want teams ranked above us to lose but which games are most critical to the cougars quest for perfection? at what point do i stop cheering for other potential bcs busters and how long do i want TCU to dominate before it encroaches are our chances to beat them? a 'what to watch for' post before each saturday would be awesome. like, the most important games, who we want to win, and why/how it helps the cougs. your blog sweet, i check it daily. thanks man

That's not a bad idea, Anonymous commenter, but I may not be the best man for the job.

I'll tell you right off: I want Utah to lose every game. Even if by winning they actually make BYU look better. Like this Saturday? I'm fully behind MAFU and the Wildcats, and I'm hoping like crazy they pull off the upset.

I guess I'm just petty like that.

Wait, USC lost on a short week?

are you shure that Gary Crowton is not coaching USC?

USC was coming off a bye week, which historically they've done well with. (The Beavers were also coming off a bye week.)

Here's some random advice for sports fans out there: don't use espn.com's Gamecast if you're trying to follow a game you're really interested in. It's a form of torture.

The Trojans were overrated... After winning two games the national media was ready to crown SC the champs before the season was finished...
